2. Are there corner pieces available for the coving?
There are pre mitred corner pieces available for a few of the more popular mouldings such as CX100,CX101,CX106,CX107,CX123,CX109. There are both internal and external corner pieces available for these.
If it is not specified on the order page that there is a corner piece then unfortunately you have to mitre the internal and external corner pieces.
For tips on how to mitre corners please see FITTING INSTRUCTIONS
There are selected panels mouldings which also have corner pieces this will be specified on the order page, if you require any further information on corners, please e-mail us on sales@decorativecovingsolutions.ie
3. What do I use to cut the coving?
A medium tooth standard saw that can be bought in any DIY/ Hardware saw is all that is required. The only other tool you will need when cutting is a mitre box, remember that the mitre box must have a sufficiently high back plate that is appropriate to the coving/cornice that you will be cutting. Orac produce mitre boxes and these can be purchased under the accessories.
4. How do I mitre corners for the coving?
You will need a mitre box to cut the angles for the corner. Mitre boxes can be purchased in our accessories section. Mainly the FB13mitre box can be used but some larger cornices may require a bigger mitre box.
Before cutting please see our FITTING INSTUCTIONS, this will give you a step by step guide to cutting a corner.
Please note, always start with an external corner as it is more noticeable and work towards the internal corner.
When cutting please use care and though and there should be no reason why a perfect mitred corner cannot be achieved.
5. Which adhesive is best and how much do I use per length?
For Covings, Panels mouldings and Skirting boards we recommend that you use FDP500 Decofix Pro. It is a slow drying Extra Strong glue that ensures a long lasting seal between the moulding and wall or ceiling. It can be painted after it hardens (normally takes 24 hours). It can also be used as a water based filler for between the joints.
We sell it in 310ml tubes, we recommend that for 1 tube will do 2.5 lengths of 2.4 metre Orac. For 2 metre lengths this tube will do 3 full lengths.
FX200 Decofix Extra is a glue for seam joints between the mouldings. FDP500 can be used around the joints but this will create stronger bond between the two lengths.
FDP700 is Decofix Hydro and is used when Orac products are put outside or in humid areas such as damp rooms.
If you require any more advice on the particular adhesives available please contact us on sales@decorativecovingsolutions.ie or on telephone
6. What kind of preparation should be done and can any type of paint be used?
All Orac products come pre primed for you, therefore this removes one job for you and makes installation easier. We recommend that you give each length a slight sanding and clean to remove and dust or dirt on the surface. This will allow the paint to grip better o the primer and give you a better paint finish.
Acrylic paints are the best to use as they have some elasticity in them and this will be a benefit is there is any movement between the coving and wall or ceiling. Emulsion paints can be used but if the movement between the coving and wall or ceiling occur, small cracks in the paint may be visible.
If installing Orac externally please note that as well as using Decofix Hydro you must also use and exterior grade paint that can cope with all weather conditions.
7. Has Orac got a fire certificate or regulations?
Coving or mouldings within the home are regarded as decorative rather than part of the building structure and therefore are not subjected to the normal fire regulations. If a fire does breakout within the home, the mouldings will melt but will not add to the fire.
For commercial buildings or if there is a chance that Orac will come into contact with an open flame or temperatures above 350 Celsius we recommend that a flame retardant paint be applied.
8. Are all products available in flexible?
Most of the more decorative covings, panels mouldings and some skirting boards are available in flexible. We do not carry flexible products in stock but these can be ordered and the lead time is approximately 3-4 weeks.
For more information on flexible products please contact us on sales@covingdirect.ie or telephone:
For a guide to fitting flexible mouldings please see our FITTING GUIDE
9. Can the columns support weight?
No our columns cannot support weight; they are for decoration purposes only. You may enhance structural supports such as steel or concrete by wrapping the half columns around this.
Another idea used for columns is to fill them with sand or cement. This is possible by following the simple instructions below:
- Around each column, construct a shuttering or strapping prior to pouring in the mixture.
- There must be a hole made in the bottom. The column must be upside filled upside down and must remain like this whilst the mixture dries. Filling must be done in several stages to prevent the column bursting.
- The shuttering has to stay around the column until the mixture has completely set.
